Ph.D. in Science. Conducted research on string theory and black hole physics at the Tokyo Institute of Technology graduate school. Worked in the financial industry for over 11 years. Subsequently held various research-related positions—primarily in computational biology—at institutions such as the University of Tokyo. Artistic interests and activities span CG, collage, oil painting, acrylics, pastels, sketching, clay modeling, 3D sculpture, photography, videography, VR/AR, and projection mapping. Currently training in desktop music composition. A fan of Nogizaka46.
Statement
Giving Form to the Invisible
I do not see the world as something fixed or complete. I see it as a dynamic field in which countless forces and relationships continuously interact, emerge, transform, and disappear.
My background is in theoretical physics, mathematical biology, and mathematical oncology. Through equations and models, I have spent much of my life trying to understand the invisible structures underlying nature and living systems.
Yet the world cannot be grasped through equations alone.
Standing before a painting, a single line, a mass of pigment, or an unexpected collision of colors can confront us with an intensity that escapes logical explanation. For me, art offers another way of approaching the reality that science seeks to understand.
For this reason, I do not confine my practice to a single medium. I work across oil and acrylic painting, pastel, collage, digital imagery, moving image, VR, and programmed light, sometimes bringing them together within the same physical space.
I am drawn to the boundaries between mathematical order and chance, control and deviation, abstraction and figuration, digital systems and physical matter.
A mathematical model of cancer evolution, a New York subway, a river in Bern, a landscape from my hometown, or an icon of contemporary popular culture may all become subjects of my work. To me, these are not separate worlds. Cells, human beings, cities, and the universe are all complex systems continually transformed through interaction.
I do not make art to explain science.
I make work from the encounter between the eye through which I have observed the world as a scientist and the body through which I experience paint, matter, color, and light.
Equations become lines. Data becomes color. Memory becomes matter. Light transforms space.
I search for the moment when a world understood through logic moves beyond logic and begins to appear as something alive.
